Chet Singh Ghat: The Fortress of Rebellion

Unlike the temple-heavy ghats of Kashi, Chet Singh Ghat is dominated by a fierce 18th-century fortress. It is the site of a famous historical battle between the Maharaja of Banaras and the British East India Company.

The Magnificent Chet Singh Fort

Instantly recognizable from the river by its massive stone walls, imposing turrets, and distinct Mughal-influenced archways, Chet Singh Ghat feels like a small military stronghold built directly into the banks of the Ganges. The fortress was constructed by Maharaja Chet Singh, the ruler of Banaras in the late 18th century.

The Historic 1781 Rebellion

The ghat is most famous for the events of 1781. Warren Hastings, the first British Governor-General of India, arrived in Varanasi to impose heavy taxes and demand military support from Maharaja Chet Singh. When the Maharaja refused, Hastings ordered his arrest.

The arrest sparked a massive, violent rebellion by the citizens of Varanasi. During the chaos, Maharaja Chet Singh famously escaped from the fort using a rope made of turbans, fleeing across the river. The British eventually regained control, and the fort was confiscated. Even today, the scars of this intense battle are woven into local folklore.

Modern Day Attractions & Dev Deepawali

Dev Deepawali Grandeur: During the massive Dev Deepawali festival, Chet Singh Ghat becomes the canvas for incredible 3D laser-light shows depicting the history of Lord Shiva and the descent of the Ganga.
Naga Sadhus: The ghat remains a popular dwelling spot for the mysterious, ash-covered Naga Sadhus during the Kumbh and Magh melas.
Photography: Because the fort juts out prominently into the river, it provides one of the sharpest, most dramatic backgrounds for early morning photography along the 84 ghats.
