Aarti Timings Boat Ride Tips Morning vs Evening Location Guide

What is the Ganga Aarti?

The Ganga Aarti is a devotional ritual that uses fire as an offering. It is performed daily as a way of giving thanks to the Goddess Ganga (the river Ganges), which Hindus consider the source of life, purity, and salvation. In Varanasi, this ritual is performed with incredible grandeur by young Pundits (priests) dressed in traditional silks, blowing conch shells, and wielding massive, multi-tiered brass oil lamps.

1. Evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat

This is the main, globally famous event that you see in all documentaries. Thousands of people gather on the steps and in boats to watch this 45-minute spectacle.

Timings for Evening Aarti:

Summer (April to October): Starts at 7:00 PM.
Winter (November to March): Starts earlier at 6:30 PM due to early sunset.

Where to watch from?
1. From the Steps: Sit right behind the priests. It is free, but you must arrive at least 1.5 hours in advance (by 5:00 PM) to claim a good spot on the stairs.
2. From a Boat (Highly Recommended): Watching the Aarti from a boat floating on the river gives you a frontal view of all the priests in sync. The reflection of the fire on the water is stunning. Boat seats during Aarti cost between ₹200 to ₹500 per person. You must board the boat by 5:30 PM.
3. Balcony Views: You can pay local shop owners/guesthouses overlooking the ghat for a seat on their rooftop. It costs around ₹300-₹500 and offers a great top-down view to avoid the crowd crush.

2. Morning Aarti (Subah-e-Banaras) at Assi Ghat

If you prefer peace over crowds, the morning Aarti at Assi Ghat is magical. Known as Subah-e-Banaras, it starts before sunrise.

Timings for Morning Aarti:

Summer: 5:00 AM to 7:00 AM
Winter: 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM

What to expect? It begins with the chanting of Vedic mantras, followed by the Aarti just as the sun rises over the eastern bank. This is immediately followed by classical Indian music performances and a huge, free group Yoga session.

How to Get There - Traffic & Travel Tips

Warning: Heavy Traffic!
The area around Dashashwamedh Ghat (Godowlia crossing) gets completely blocked by 5:30 PM. Cars are heavily restricted in the final 1.5 Kilometers.

Our Advice: If you are staying far from the ghats (e.g., Cantonment, Sarnath, or Airport), book your local taxi early. Your driver will drop you at the Godowlia multi-level parking or Girijaghar crossing around 4:30 PM. From there, you will have to walk for 15 minutes through the vibrant market street to reach the Ghat.
