Harishchandra Ghat is one of the two primary cremation ghats in Varanasi. Known for its legendary association with the truthful King Harishchandra, it is an ancient site of immense religious gravity.
Harishchandra Ghat is named after the legendary mythological King Raja Harishchandra. Known for his unwavering commitment to truth and righteousness (Dharma), the gods tested him. He lost his kingdom, his wealth, and was forced into slavery. He ended up working as an undertaker (Dom) at this very cremation ground in Kashi.
One tragic night, his own wife brought the dead body of their son to be cremated. Even then, Harishchandra refused to allow the cremation without the mandatory fee, upholding his duty above his grief. The gods, moved by his ultimate devotion to truth, restored his kingdom and brought his son back to life. Hindus hold this ghat in profound reverence, considering a cremation here highly auspicious.
• Traditional Wood Pyres: Like Manikarnika Ghat, you will see continuous traditional wooden funeral pyres burning on the steps.
• Electric Crematorium: Harishchandra Ghat is unique because it also houses Varanasi's electric crematorium, providing a more modern, environmentally friendly (and affordable) option to locals.
• Kedar Ghat Proximity: The ghat is located slightly south of the main city center, right next to the vibrant Kedar Ghat, known for its South Indian architectural influences.
Harishchandra Ghat is located a bit further south from the main bustle of Dashashwamedh, but closer to Assi Ghat.

Both are cremation ghats. Manikarnika is the most famous, centrally located, and much larger, operating 24/7. Harishchandra is smaller, located further south, and features both traditional wood pyres and a modern electric crematorium.
Cars cannot go all the way down to the river steps. The closest point a taxi can drop you is the Sonarpura main road, from which it is a short walk.
