Tulsi Ghat is deeply steeped in literature and mythology. Famous as the home of the saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas, it is the sacred site where the epic Hindi Ramayana—the Ramcharitmanas—was composed.
Previously known as Lolark Ghat, it was renamed Tulsi Ghat in honor of the great Hindu poet-saint Goswami Tulsidas (1532–1623). Tulsidas spent the later part of his life here and authored large sections of the Ramcharitmanas, the holy text that made the Ramayana accessible to the common masses in the Awadhi language.
Mythology dictates that when Tulsidas completed his manuscript, it accidentally fell into the River Ganga but miraculously did not sink. It floated back to him, proving its divine nature.
• The Ancient House & Relics: Tulsidas’s house and the Hanuman temple he established still stand atop the ghat. Inside, devotees can see his wooden clogs (khadaun) and a piece of the original boat he used to cross the river.
• Sankat Mochan Foundation: Tulsi Ghat is the epicenter of the clean Ganga movement, championed by the late Prof. Veer Bhadra Mishra, the Mahant (head priest) of the Sankat Mochan Temple.
• Traditional Wrestling (Akharas): Varanasi is famous for Kushti (mud wrestling). The classical Tulsi Akhara located here is over 400 years old, where pehlwans (wrestlers) still practice daily at dawn.
• Lolark Kund: Located right behind the ghat, this is an ancient stepped well dedicated to the Sun God. Taking a dip here during Lolark Chhath is believed to cure ailments and bless couples with children.
