History & Mythology of Dashashwamedh Ghat

According to ancient Hindu mythology, Dashashwamedh Ghat was created by Lord Brahma to welcome Lord Shiva. The word "Dashashwamedh" translates to the sacrifice (Medh) of ten (Dash) horses (Ashwa). It is said that Lord Brahma performed the grand Dasa Ashwamedha Yajna here, plunging ten horses into the sacred fire.

Historically, the ghat was extensively rebuilt in 1748 by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao. A few decades later, in 1774, it was renovated by Ahilyabai Holkar, the great queen of Indore, who also rebuilt the adjacent Kashi Vishwanath Temple.
